Just like any other NCAA managed bowl, Texas Bowl is an example of a post-season bowl game involving college football athletes and was started in 2006. True to its name, the Texas Bowl is held in Houston, Texas and replaces the then popular Houston Bowl. With its former name, Houston Bowl took place every year from 2000 to 2005, also at the same venue. Unlike other bowl games though, the area of Houston experienced a more or less continuous tradition of annual college football events with the first game as the Bluebonnet Bowl which ran from 1959 to 1987.

In this area, two of the most prominent competing teams are the Houston Cougars and the TCU Horned Frogs.

The legal materials of the Texas Bowl which includes but not limited to the logo or crest, and the name among others were formally released to the public through a pres conference on August 10, 2006. Leading conferences placed affiliation with the Texas Bowl in the likes of the Big East Conference, Conference USA, Big East Conference, together with a lone entry from Mountain West Conference with Texas Christian University.

With the Texas Bowl having a set commitment with the various conferences for a specified number of years, the payout to the said conferences also vary. In general, the conferences will be receiving $615,500 each as specified in the agreed rules. The Big East Conference and Conference USA will be receiving $750,000 and $500,000, respectively, for playing in the mentioned Texas Bowl games.
